Pawleys Island

Paddle through one of South Carolina’s most peaceful coastal destinations.

About Pawleys Island

Pawleys Island is one of the oldest seaside communities on the East Coast, known for its quiet beaches, unspoiled salt marshes, and laid-back Lowcountry charm. Surrounded by tidal creeks, estuaries, and the Atlantic Ocean, it’s a favorite destination for kayakers looking to experience scenic paddling, abundant wildlife, and peaceful waters away from the crowds. Whether you’re exploring the marshes or fishing from your kayak, Pawleys Island offers an unforgettable coastal adventure.

Important Information

Pawleys Island’s tides play a major role in your paddling experience, so always check tide charts before launching. Low tide can leave some creeks too shallow to navigate, while incoming and outgoing tides create stronger currents around creek mouths and the causeways. Be mindful of oyster beds, changing weather, and boat traffic in the main channels, and always wear a life jacket. For the most enjoyable trip, many local paddlers recommend launching around high tide or during a gentle moving tide to maximize access to the marshes.

Local Insider Tip
Local anglers know that Pawleys Island's marshes and creek mouths are some of the best places to fish by kayak. Redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and black drum are commonly found around oyster beds, grass edges, and deeper creek channels, especially during a moving tide. Launch early in the morning for calmer water, cooler temperatures, and a better chance of spotting dolphins, egrets, osprey, and other wildlife before the day gets busy.
Kayak Access
Pawleys Island offers several convenient places to launch your kayak and explore the surrounding waterways. Pawleys Island Public Boat Landing, South Causeway Landing, North Causeway Access, Huntington Beach State Park, and Waccamaw River access points.
